Fairly common resident in unimproved grassland habitats of fields banks and commons.

Centaurea nigra with larva feeding in the roots and stems from August to April.

Male shows dark hindwing separating it from male E. scutulana which has a pale hindwing and is generally smaller with less white on the forewing. Female cannot reliably be separated from female E. scutulana without dissection.
